Welcome to the Tutorial!

Hello! This is Jack with Let's Draw Today. Thank you so much for joining me and drawing with me today!

For many of us, the tree we drew in grade school consisted of a bushy cloud shape sitting on a stump. What if I told you that you can draw a realistic tree with leaves the same way?

Drawing a leafy tree, much like drawing anything else, is all about starting with very general, very broad basic shapes, just like that tree from grade school.

From this basic framework, we can break the tree down into even smaller shapes and develop details, one small shape at a time.

There are many approaches to drawing a tree. In this tutorial, I will show you one of those approaches.

Join me so together we can draw a tree with leaves!

The total length of the video segments for this entire tutorial is 4 hours and 10 minutes. However, I have this tutorial broken down into smaller lessons, each consisting of a video of me drawing the picture and explaining each step as I do it. Below each video, you will find a summary with step-by-step directions and pictures. This allows you to take it one lesson and then one step at a time, and you will feel more confident in your ability to see your drawing through to the end.

How to Proceed Through This Tutorial

This tutorial is an extended version of the original post. It builds upon the original tutorial by supplementing its written steps and pictures with several videos that demonstrate each step in the process of creating the drawing. Each video is a full-length, normal-pace recording. Throughout the videos, I explain every step in detail and give other tips and suggestions not covered in the original post or the written steps.

I encourage you to go through each section of the tutorial, one lecture at a time. Watch the video demonstration for the lecture and draw along with me. Then move on to the next lecture for the next video.

You can also preview the content in a video lecture by scrolling through the video clip. Another alternative is to read or skim the written summary steps and pictures below the video.

I believe a picture is worth a thousand words and a video is worth even more than a thousand pictures. So, while I will often describe what I am drawing, you will learn a lot of the how-to steps simply by watching the videos and doing as I do to the best of your ability. You can use the directions and tips I give along the way during each lecture to supplement your efforts.

I believe it is helpful to see how to NOT do something. I also believe that imperfections are okay, and you should not be afraid to make mistakes while creating your drawings or other artwork. Therefore, you will see my mistakes and erasures, which I think can serve as useful learning tools.

Other Learning Options

Just in case video isn't your preferred method of learning, you can go to the Extras section and check out the downloadable ebook version of this extended tutorial. It has all of the same written summary steps with pictures instead of video. Also, don't forget about the other learning resources found in the Extras section: a PDF picture slideshow of this tutorial and similar color and black-and-white reference photos for extra practice.

Love the Journey of Learning How to Draw

Finally, remember that learning how to draw is all about practice, experimenting, and enjoyment. As you proceed through this or any of my other tutorials, it's easy to get frustrated if you are making mistakes or your drawing doesn't look like my example. My advice to you is to let go of your frustration.

Instead, learn to love the journey. Try your best! Don't be afraid to make changes to what I am doing to make it your own. Celebrate your drawing successes, even if it's one small success that makes you proud of yourself. If you are not getting it right on the first try, be proud of yourself for trying, and then try again.

Draw along with as many of my tutorial courses as you can, have fun along the way, and you will see remarkable improvements in your drawing skills before you realize it. Stay positive, stay motivated, don't give up, and do keep drawing!
