I work with beginning artists who are just learning how to make quick, simple sketches or more realistic drawings with graphite pencils.

Together, we will build upon your strengths and find solutions to your unique challenges with small, achievable milestones, so you can realize your goals and your fullest drawing potential!

The structure of each session may vary from person to person based on the unique needs of each client. However, here's an idea of what you might expect an average hour-long session agenda to look like (times are approximate and flexible):

✏️ Brief introductions. General questions and/or discussion of concepts, techniques, materials, etc. (10 minutes)

✏️ Teacher demonstration of simplified drills based on concept. Then practice together. (10 minutes)

✏️ Teacher demonstration of sketch or drawing based on concept. Student draws along with teacher. We go at a pace comfortable for the student. (30 minutes)

✏️ Discuss homework: daily drills and/or drawing assignment(s) (application of concept to new subject) (10 minutes)

Most of the knowledge, skills, and experiences I have are centered around the following areas:

☑️ Fundamental elements of art

☑️ Graphite pencils

☑️ Loose sketching

☑️ Sketching with realism

☑️ Realistic pencil drawing

☑️ Realistic pencil portraits

☑️ "Freehand" drawing methods

☑️ Grid drawing methods

☑️ Perspective drawing

If you have basic questions or need specific help outside the realm of these areas, I still may be able to provide guidance or insights. Just understand that, if you'd like more advanced coaching about other mediums or drawing styles, I may not be the best fit for you. For more info, please read the FAQ's below.

Hi, I’m Jack.

I have many years of experience with pencil drawing and teaching. Beginning at the age of 3, I drew constantly as a child. Drawing was always my first love, even when I chose a career path not focused on art. As an adult, I went into the army and then to college to get a Bachelor's of Art in Education and a Master's of Art in Curriculum and Instruction. I spent 17 rewarding years as a classroom teacher. Throughout it all, I never stopped drawing. I have taken a few courses and trainings over the years, but I mostly consider myself to be self-taught. These days, I combine my years of drawing experience and my years of teaching experience to help other adults find the same joy in drawing that I have known my entire life. My experience as a teacher has taught me the value of breaking big concepts down into small, learnable steps. That is the same approach I bring to my drawing tutorials, courses, and coaching services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What skill level do I need to have to benefit from this coaching?

My coaching is intended to help beginning pencil artists who struggle to know where to start and how to proceed in a particular sketch or drawing. If you consider yourself to be more of an intermediate pencil artist, and you have a specific challenge that you've seen me address online, I'll be happy to help you too!

Do you provide coaching with any other mediums besides pencil?

As I have far more experience with graphite pencils over any other medium, that is where I can be most helpful to you. I have limited experience with colored pencils and Procreate with Apple Pencil, and even less experience with charcoal and pastels. If you need help using these other mediums, I will guide you as much as I can based on what I know.

What styles of drawing can you help me with?

Just as graphite pencil is my area of expertise as far as choice of medium, my preferred drawing styles are realism and looser sketches. If you want coaching to help you draw character art, fashion, cartoons, or caricatures, I may not be the best fit for you, but I will help you as much as I can.

What payment methods do you accept?

To ensure a smooth and hassle-free purchase, major credit cards, debit cards, and Google/Apple Pay are accepted.

How do I schedule my appointment?

Click the link above the intake form on this page to check for available time slots. Then, complete the intake form on this page. When you click Submit, you'll have a choice to purchase either a one-hour session for $30 or four one-hour sessions for $100 total. Upon purchasing coaching, you'll receive further instructions on how to book a time for your appointment.

Can I purchase coaching more than once?

Absolutely! If you find yourself in need of coaching more than once, simply purchase the coaching again. Each time you purchase, you'll have the choice of either one one-hour session or four one-hour sessions.

Can I get a refund if I'm unhappy with my purchase?

Typically I don't provide refunds for coaching. I may make exceptions under certain circumstances, including: canceling at least 48 hours prior to your appointment or significant technical interruptions during the call. In these instances, an effort will first be made to make up any missed time. Also, I cannot make a partial refund. If you pay for an hour-long session but decide to leave the call early, I will still need to charge for the full hour. If you are unsatisfied with your coaching, please reach out to me to see if your purchase is eligible for a refund.

How do I contact you if I have more questions?

Email me at [email protected] and I will gladly answer any other questions you may have!
